The Story of FIKA

Hi, my name is Joe and welcome to FIKA. Like many people during the pandemic, my career as a designer at jefdesigns.com was put on hold, so I took advantage of quarantine to explore a whole new area of creativity. I started hosting small, pick-up bake sales to reconnect with my community. Beginning with family recipes, I then explored unique desserts, incorporating exciting and subtly sweet French Asian flavors, as well as truffles.
Fika, the Swedish ritual of slowing down to enjoy a moment with friends and loved ones over a sweet snack, perfectly expressed my desire to spend time with others and share my desserts. Over the last five years I’ve worked to blend my design and culinary skills to bring FIKA to life.

Inspiration

I come from a long line of Italian and Czech women who knew what they were doing in the kitchen. My grandma Grace’s Italian sweet cheese pastries were my favorite Christmas dessert. And I loved watching my grandma Annie using her entire counter to make Kolaches (fittingly, the sweet cheese was my favorite flavor). My mother, Lynne, had a cottage bakery of her own making hand dipped truffles. Each holiday, every surface in our house was covered in chocolates waiting to be boxed up. My journey as a baker is due in no small part to these women.
