It’s May 2020, and I just finished remodeling my kitchen. Quarantine is in place, creating the perfect conditions for a growing baking obsession. Croissants from Tartine Bakery’s cookbook were my first foray into pastry. Pretty soon I branched out to other forms, and then desserts.
While excited that baking combined my love of food with art and design, there was the real danger of eating way too many sweets. So, I came up with the idea of having bake sales. The week before, I send out an email of the menu and take pre-orders. The day of, people would arrive, leave tupperware on a front porch table, and I would fill their orders. Having missed socializing with people, this was a great way to interact with friends and to share my creations with them.
Monthly sales have been happening for the last four years now and usually sell out within an hour. Besides financial gain, they’ve been a great way for me to keep experimenting with new flavors and techniques. Portland, OR seems to be a place where small businesses can have unconventional beginnings (food carts, pop-ups, etc), and I feel fortunate to be a part of that.
If you’re interested in hearing about future sales, shoot me an email or join our mailing list!
