The idea of FIKA germinated at the start of 2020. I was incredibly lucky to begin my kitchen remodel a week before lockdown. During quarantine I developed a huge interest in baking and desserts. Unable to take classes during the pandemic, I read anything I could get my hands on and tested tons of recipes, learning techniques and gaining the confidence to tailor those recipes to my tastes.
Once I had built a portfolio of desserts, I began hosting small bake sales. People would arrive and pick up their orders on my porch. Being able to socialize again and share my creations made lockdown bearable.
Four years later and FIKA has grown into a second career (my first being a lighting designer at jefdesigns.com). Bake sales happen twice a month and sell out early. Several pop-ups are scheduled in 2024. I am also teaching a truffle making class, and I offer boxed assortments for the winter holidays, Valentine’s and Easter that can be shipped nationally.
Here are a few pics of where the magic happens, FIKA mascot Mabel, and a before shot to see the transformation.
Cheers,
Joe
